Hi Neale,

A friend of mine just posted this question elsewhere and I thought I'd see if you knew the answer. He is an American living in the UK. Is this some sort of new thing that the IRS is cracking down on to find out where citizens are hiding their money or is this BS? Thanks, Leah

"So I lived in the U.K. for the entirety of 2011. I got an email today from my accountants at Deloitte who are asking me to fill in my `calendar' to show where I was in 2011. They said they need to not only know where I worked but also my travel patterns so I needed to fill in where I was EVERY DAY of 2011 including vacations to foreign countries and to indicate which countries and cities I visited even when I wasn't working. That to me sounds a bit suspicious.

Why would they need to know that? "

That sounds like a question for Deloitte.

American citizens and permanent residents can exempt a certain amount of money from US Taxation if they were out of the country for a certain period of time. But I don't know why they would be wanting your friend to document all his travels.
