I miss listening to the Kookaburra's laugh and the sounds of the other Australian birds. I lived next to Kings Park in Perth, Western Australia and I was spoilt being woken up by all the wonderful bird sounds whilst still living in the city.

I love going home and while the jet lag sucks - the bonus of your body clock being out of whack is being up at dawn and listening to Australia wake up. Sounds cheesy I'm sure but I love sitting on the back verandah as the sun comes up listening to the birds.

Wish I put the telly on this morning!

Didn't hear any kooka's when I was home but the morning chortle of the magies made me smile.
Kookaburras were high on my list of "things I miss the most" when I first moved here.

I used to have one that sort outside my cabin at the Naval base in Mosman. The darn thing used to knock my cigarettes off the balcony!

Miss Aussie birds, waking up to sounds of the bush too. I live too close to the city here. Even surrounded by 3 national parks we just dont get those awesome sounds.

We generally had magpies - my mum still feeds some on the stone fence dad built! The only thing close I get here is hearing a woodpecker - something we don't get back home

The only thing close I get here is hearing a woodpecker - something we don't get back home I too didn't live in a kooka area growing up. Plenty of maggies and currawongs though. And gang-gangs (that used to get plastered on the cotoneaster berries).
The kookas however were plentiful and raucous at Nan's house where we spent Chrissy hols. I have fond memories of feeding them the "burnt offerings" from the backyard barbeque. Ah, memories of kookaburras "killing" a crispified snag. Good times.:D

The first thing that woke me up the morning after I arrived here was a long kookaburra call! At 20 past 4 in the morning!
Since then after a short period of shutting the windows, I sleep with the windows open, so that I get to hear the morning chorus if I wake. The kookaburras don't roost close by, but the lorikeets, magpies, storm birds, butcher birds and a strident plover do. And there is a noisy flock of sulphur-crested cockatoos around here too some mornings!
The other day when it was raining, one of our friendly butcher birds serenaded us. Part of his complicated song was a kookaburra call! :)

Butcher birds are fascinating to imitate calls, but are vicious if you have outside birds in an aviary.

Today our baby butcher bird serenaded us during the rain. He must be all grown up now!
