All Aussie Adventures With Russell Coight (4)

For those of us who grew up watching "The Leyland Brothers" & "The Bush Tucker Man", then you'll immediately recognize the genre that Glen Robbins is taking the Michael out of. 13 eps over 2 discs. Not side-splitting (except to my 8yo son), but certainly has it's moments. Alby Mangles looks professional by comparison.

An Audience With John Farnham (ALL)

Since "The Voice" turned 50, he's been easing up a bit & starting to reflect on a career that has spanned 5 decades. Here he sits down & answers questions about his life, loves & career choices with some of Australia's biggest names - from Rex Hunt to Peter Brock, Steve Vizard to Olivia Newton-John & more. He also performs 5 songs from his new album. As this is a TV special, picture & sound are nice & clear. Lots of good entertaining fun, but I wish it was a bit longer.

Australia's Ultimate Songs (ALL)

Everyone will have their fav 30 Ultimate Aussie songs. Most of the ones presented here will please most people, but I must admit to not knowing a few of them. As the clips are from different eras, quality ranges from really average to fairly decent, swapping between widescreen & full screen. Almost worth not turning the TV on & just listening to the audio. A great disc for that Aussie theme party (or the next MUO get-together).

Best Bits Of The Late Show - Champagne Edition (4)

This 2 disc set contains all 3 volumes of The Best Of The Late Show, plus an extra 50 minutes of extra stuff, plus the entire "Working Class Man" by Jimmy Hannan, the entire Charlie the Wonderdog clip "Rescue On Mt Variable Weather". Plus there's almost 6 hours of audio commentary from the entire cast. Colours & sound are as good as a TV show would get (and no flicker through the SV-5000W). This will be getting a regular workout on my player - better than anything SNL has produced in years.

Billy Connolly's World Tour Of Australia (4)

Part travelogue, part documentary, part stand up, and all fun. Billy looks at Australia through the eyes of a crazed Scotsman. Picture & sound are superb & even though the concert footage is slightly below the grade of the rest, it's certainly not bad at all. There are 8 episodes over 2 discs. Be warned - if you know Billy, you'll know that there is some language on these discs. However, seeing all my old stomping grounds brought a smile to my face.

A Clockwork Orange (2, 4)

This is one of those movies that everyone always talked about, but I never got to see until I got the R4 disc. Colours are good but a little soft. Audio is clear, but the dialogue sometimes had me replaying certain scenes to understand what was being said. Extras are limited to a trailer & awards list. And after all the expectation, I thought the movie itself was OK, but not sure how often this disc will get a run. (NOTE: This disc is part of the Stanley Kubrick box set).

The Club (ALL)

One of my all time favourites. Graham Kennedy & Jack Thompson lead a terrific cast in a story of greed, power & money .. oh, and there's some football too. Actual players, reporters & commentators in the film add to the whole atmosphere. And who doesn't love "Up There Cazaly"? Although the money amounts have changed since the 70's, you could easily imagine these same power strugles going on now. A classic.

The Complete Adventures Of Lano & Woodley (4)

"I've got a feeling ... Got a bit of an inkling ... This is gonna be ... One of those days". Finally, the boys come to DVD in this 2 DVD set of their short lived TV series. Features blooper reel, audio commentary on select episodes & some of the best slapstick comedy you'll see. Funny stuff. (And some free advice - If you ever get the chance to see them live - TAKE IT!!!)

Crackerjack (4)

Mick Molloy wrote, produced & stars in this nice little movie about lawn bowls. The cast is terrific with John Clark, Bill Hunter & Frank Wilson, plus Judith Lucy in her first screen role Not a gut-buster, but had some very funny moments. Overall, a pleasant feel-good movie.

The Dish (4)

This movie has quickly become a personal favourite of mine. The Region 1 version of this movie was a "movie only" disc. However, the R4 version is filled with behind the scenes footage, heaps of archival footage that weren't used in the movie itself, 2 full length audio commentaries, a timeline of the Apollo 11 mission complete with audio clips. Picture quality of the movie is excellent - anyone who has been to "The Dish" in Parkes will immediately identify with the colours on screen. Audio is clear. This disc is for those who not only want to watch, IMHO, a great film, but also have a great reference tool about man's first steps on the moon.

Fast Forward - Funniest TV Send Ups: Vol. 3 (4)

Ah - does THIS bring back the memories. This disc contains many sketches from what was (in my opinion) one of the best Aussie sketch comedy shows. However, the title "TV Send Ups" implies that the sketches are send ups of TV shows & commercials, but there are a number of sketches that are NOT TV related. Still, many laughs to be had. Picture & audio are as you would expect, which is to say they are fine.

Jimeoin (ALL)

This is the second season of the popular comedians TV show. It contains all 12 episodes, plus a documentary "Standing On The Road" (Jimeoin, Glenn Robbins & Russell Gilbert on tour through rural Victoria). Picture & audio are as you would expect from a TV show, although some of the outside shots in the episodes on Disc 2 display a noticable wobbling (the outside shots on Disc 1 do NOT have this problem). Also stars Glenn Robbins, Bob Franklin, Michael Vietch & Brain Nankervis (the guy who gave us Raymond J. Bartholomew). If you like your comedy a little different, but very funny, this is for you. Highly recommended.

Jimeoin - All Over The Shop (ALL)

Funny man Jimeoin (why they call him "The Jimeoin" on the cover is a mystery) live in concert doing what he does best. Observational humour at it's best - you'll spend the night laughing as he tells you about things that YOU do in your everyday life. This gets funnier every time I watch it. Highly recommended.

John Farnham 33 1/3 (ALL)

This disc is basically a "behind the scenes" look at the making of John's 33 1/3 album. It includes a documentary & video clips of each song. You can watch either the documentary or the clips separately, or watch the documentary with each clip inserted at the appropriate point. You also have the option to play each clip singly, or have the disc play them one after the other automatically (so it becomes like an audio CD). The doc is in B & W, the clips are in colour. A nice discs for fans, but not sure what replay factor it will have.

Kenny Everett - The Complete Naughty Bits (ALL)

For those who remember watching this on the ABC, there are a lot of great memories here. However, as with anything labelled "complete" or "best of" etc, it comes down to personal tastes. And for me, this is NOT complete (The Do-It-Yourself Bee Gees Kit? Mick Jagger & Elton John send-ups?). Still, plenty of Syd, Marcel, baby in the pram, Cliff Richard & Hot Gossip. Hope there's a "more complete" followup somehwhere down the track.

The Main Event (2, 4)

This is the concert series featuring John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John <SIGH> & Anthony Warlow. The disc has either Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 soundtracks. As it's a concert, most of the action happens in the center of the screen, with the rest being dark crowd shots. The colours are good. The sound is wonderful. These 3 performers really know how to entertain & seem to have a great time. Highly Recommended.

The Professionals (2)

When I was 18, I bought a Escort 2.0L. The reason? The Professionals. Bodie, Doyle & Cowley were a permanent fixture on my TV each Saturday night. Well, those days are back. This 16-disc (yes, you read right - 16!!) box set contains all 57 episodes, plus bonus features on the fashions (horrific), the cars (still cool after 25 years) plus guest star lists & behind the scenes interviews. The picture looks very good (the box claims "digitally remastered") & sound is also good. Maybe some day I'll get an Escort RS2000 just like Doyle's, but for now, I will once again dream my dreams through The Professionals.

Space 1999 - Year 1(4)

Gerry Anderson (of Thunderbirds fame) swaps puppets for live action in this sci-fi hit from the early 80's. PIcture & audio are as good as you need them to be. Extras can be found on each of the 6 discs & include character bios, concept drawings, Moonbase Alpha schematics & interviews. If you like you TV cult, then this is for you.

Space 1999 - Year 2(4)

Same comments as for the Year 1 collection.

The Sum Of Us (ALL)

A good Aussie movie that takes the issue of homosexuality & presents it in a uniquely Australian "mates" style. Russell Crowe (in his pre-"Gladiator" days) & Jack Thompson are thoroughly entertaining, and the Sydney backdrops are glorious (I love Melbourne, but you can't beat Sydney Harbour as a film location). The picture & audio on this disc are both excellent. Main extras are an interview & a file commentary with Jack Thompson.
