Pie Maker Meat Pies - from Rose

I adapted my own meat pie recipe to be more suitable for the Sunbeam Pie Maker. This makes a VERY yummy meat pie, and easy, peasy to make! This recipe makes 8 pies.

Ingredients for Filling:

  • 1 lb very lean ground round steak
  • 1/2 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 beef stock cubes
  • Salt & Pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Pinch nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon Gravox, or American Beef Base
  • 3/4 cups water, extra
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Ingredients for Pastry:

  • 1 packet frozen Puff Pastry sheets (2 sheets)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon water

Method:

  1. Place meat and onion into pan, stir over low heat until meat is well browned. Drain off any surplus fat. Add crumbled stock cubes, water, salt, pepper and nutmeg, stir until boiling.
  2. Reduce heat, cover, simmer gently for 20 minutes, remove from heat.
  3. Combine extra water, flour, and Gravox/Beef Base, stir until smooth. Add flour mixture to meat, stir until combined. Return to heat, stir until meat boils and thickens.
  4. Add soy sauce and paprika, stir until combined.Simmer, uncovered, 5 to 10 minutes, remove from heat, allow to become cool.
  5. Roll a sheet of puff pastry to desired thickness and use Pie Maker cutters to cut four bottoms and four tops. (You will have to re-roll pastry to get last bottom and top). Repeat with second sheet. Cover cut pastry with damp paper towel to stop drying.
  6. Shape pie bottoms into pie maker, and brush edges with egg/water mixture. Fill with meat mixture.
  7. Place pastry tops on top of meat and brush with egg mixture.
  8. Bake in Pie Maker between 8 - 9 minutes.
  9. Repeat steps 6 - 9 for remaining pies.

Extras:

Add any of the following for different tasting pies - Finely diced mushrooms; Chopped whole, peeled tomatoes; Chopped bacon bits; Curry powder for a curry pie; Instead of using a pie top, use mashed potato instead; Anything else your imagination might come up with. :)
