Adele's Mum's Chutney

This is word for word from my Mum's recipe book (bless her heart) and can be called no other name but MUM'S CHUTNEY

Ingredients:

  • 6lbs tomatoes
  • 2lbs apples (dried if you can get them)
  • 4lbs sugar
  • 1 cup of sultanas and currants
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves (in bag)
  • 1 tablespoon pepper
  • about 1 3/4 litres of malt vinegar
  • paprika to taste
  • 4 large brown onions (I like lots of onions)- don't chop too finely

Method:

  1. Chop up tomatoes and onions and sprinkle salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Stir sugar and vinegar and pour over, then put your currants etc in plus a little bag of cloves (get a bit of rag and tie up and just drop it in)
  3. You boil this until everything is soft. I keep tasting it, if more salt is put in just add it on in.
  4. Sometimes you don't have to thicken it, but if you do, I generally thicken it with cornflour...
