Cultural Differences - Australia/America

This is such a huge subject, which can be the source of great amusement, as well as great frustration. From the light switches being "upside down", to tap (faucet) confusion, to language differences (yes, there are many), to your first supermarket experience, it can be one of the most frustrating parts of moving to the U.S. Most of us fight the differences and complain loudly. But every one of us has learned that the sooner you accept the differences, and stop expecting America to conform to Australian standards :), the sooner life in the U.S. becomes easier.

  • Culture Shock - The best resource available - using information gathered by nearly four years of MUO Aussie/American Expat experience.
  • Anne Aussie in America - This is one of my favourite websites. Anne has a wonderful sense of humour about the Australian experience of living in America. Her website is an absolute delight to browse and read for many enjoyable hours.
  • U.S. Survival Tips for Aussies - A great little page explaining some of the most encountered differences.
  • Australian/American Language Differences - Some of the more common differences in a language which is "supposed" to be the same.
